Announcing: 11th Issue of Project Haystack Connections Magazine, Haystack Connect 2022, Haystack Essentials eLearning Course and New Members

The Project Haystack organizations is pleased to announce the publication of the September 2022 Connections Magazine! This issue of Connections Magazine reports on the latest activities submitted by the Project Haystack community from around the world, looking at how this community-driven, open-source standard is adding meaning to the vast amount of device data produced by smart devices. Project Haystack provides a comprehensive, open standard for semantic tagging of data that has been embraced worldwide. As the world moves towards becoming more and more data-driven, the theme of this issue is: Data. The Foundation of Smarter Buildings.

Working with data from building systems is where the Project Haystack tagging methodology gained traction and adoption, but the Haystack methodology is not just about HVAC, temperature sensors, fans, and meters. The IoT, Building IoT and the Industrial IoT are bringing diverse smart devices into high-rise commercial buildings, industrial facilities, universities, homes, factories, and agriculture. The Project Haystack tagging methodology is now being deployed in thousands of buildings incorporating millions of square feet globally.

Today, Project Haystack also announced a new Haystack Essentials eLearning Course by Fantom Factory. It is designed for anyone new to Project Haystack, to learn what Haystack Tags are and to understand how to apply them to a basic site model. Using interactive exercises, trainees can practice applying these tags into example scenarios and models. More information is available at: www.fantomfactory.com/learn/the-essentials-of-haystack-tagging.

“The importance of this effort to society is clear. Data is fundamental to businesses. Data is essential to operating and managing our buildings and for them to become smarter. Data is now an irreplaceable asset. However how businesses handle and manage data, continues to evolve. And so does Project Haystack," said Alex Rohweder, Executive Director of the Project Haystack Organization. "Growing membership in the organization, additional working groups, and real-world, use cases, now estimated to be over 50,000 facilities worldwide, all point to the growth and acceptance of the Haystack standard."

Facility owners, operators, managers, and service companies recognize that a standardized approach to semantic data modeling has been key to overcoming the hurdles related to effectively using data produced by the built environment. Many of the articles in this issue were written by end users including design consultants, commissioning experts, smart building consultants, property managers and developers – all of whom are demanding smarter, interoperable solutions. This issue also focuses on companies that are responding by providing Haystack-compatible products and solutions.

“In 2021, amid the pandemic, we saw that holding Haystack Connect as a virtual event and making registration free reduced barriers to attendance. And with that, we had record attendance and were able to expand the worldwide reach of this event," said Marc Petock, Executive Secretary of the Project Haystack Organization. "So, in 2022, we will continue this success story and one difference for 2022 will be the days and times. Each day will consist of a 90-minute session, which we think is the perfect amount of time for attendees to focus and engage. We will still have three days in a row to start—that will be September 13-15, and again on September 28, October 12 and November 9."

Consisting of nearly 90 pages, the 11th issue of Connections Magazine includes articles contributed by 75F, Brainbox AI, Energocentrum Plus, Fantom Factory, Tridium, J2 Innovations, Lynxspring, Padi, SkyFoundry and Tridium.

An article about the Project Haystack Working Group on EV Chargers, written by Rich Jennings of SkyFoundry, provides an update on the work they are doing and the update on the VRF Working Group was written by Michael Lakhdar of Conserve It. There is a section dedicated to Tools for Developers and Integrators, How to Get Involved, a curation of social media about Project Haystack Member Projects, Practices and Products, and a directory of all Project Haystack Members.

Project Haystack Working Groups provided updates to their work and as always, there is a section dedicated to Tools for Developers and Integrators, How to Get Involved, a curation of social media about Project Haystack Member Projects, Practices and Products, and a directory of all Project Haystack Members.

This issue also includes information on all of the upcoming Haystack Connect 2022 conference dates, once again being held virtually between September and November, and we have a section with links to videos of past speaker sessions.
